How Much Does Health Insurance Cost?

There's no single answer — but here's exactly what drives your actual premium up or down.

Why there’s no one number

Health insurance pricing is personal — two people in the same city can get very different quotes depending on their situation. Rather than chase a generic average, it’s more useful to understand the specific factors that move your price up or down.

What actually drives your premium

  • Age — premiums generally increase with age under ACA rating rules
  • Location — costs vary significantly by state and even by county, based on local healthcare costs and carrier competition
  • Household size — covering a family costs more than an individual plan, but per-person cost often drops compared to buying separate policies
  • Plan type and metal tier — Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans trade lower premiums for higher out-of-pocket costs, or the reverse
  • Tobacco use — can increase premiums in most states
  • Income and subsidy eligibility — many people qualify for premium tax credits that lower the cost significantly below the sticker price

Notably, pre-existing health conditions don’t affect pricing for ACA-compliant Marketplace or private major medical plans — that underwriting restriction was removed under the ACA. Short-term plans are the exception and can still be medically underwritten.

Why the first quote you see online is rarely the real number

Generic online quote tools often show a low headline number that doesn’t reflect subsidy eligibility, doesn’t compare across enough carriers, or applies to a plan that doesn’t actually fit your provider network needs. An accurate quote factors in your real income, household, and location — not a rough estimate.

Premium isn’t total cost

The monthly premium is only part of the picture — deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums all factor into what you’d actually spend over a year. A slightly higher premium with a much lower deductible can end up cheaper overall depending on how much care you expect to need.
