When Is Open Enrollment?
The window to sign up for Marketplace coverage without a qualifying life event — and it's gotten shorter.
The next Open Enrollment Period
Open Enrollment for the federal Marketplace (HealthCare.gov) runs from November 1 through mid-December each year, with coverage starting January 1 for people who enroll by the deadline. Starting with the enrollment period opening November 2026, the deadline in most HealthCare.gov states has shortened to December 15 — a change from the January 15 deadline used in prior years, so it’s worth acting earlier than you may be used to.
States that run their own exchange (rather than using HealthCare.gov) set their own deadlines, which can run later than December 15 — worth confirming for your specific state.
What if you miss Open Enrollment?
Missing the deadline doesn’t necessarily mean waiting until next year. Certain life events — losing a job, getting married, having a baby, moving — can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period, giving you a window to enroll outside the normal dates. Some plan types, like short-term or supplemental coverage, are also available year-round regardless of Open Enrollment.
Why enrolling early matters
With a shorter enrollment window now in effect, waiting until the last minute carries more risk of missing the deadline entirely. Getting your options compared early gives you time to actually think through the decision instead of rushing it in the final days.
